Joseph Landon, of Jojo's Ventures · New York, NY

In the heart of New York City, Joseph Landon is redefining what it means to share history through tourism. As the owner of Jojo’s Ventures, Landon has spent the last five years building a tour company that does more than simply show visitors the sights, it creates personal connections to the past that resonate long after the experience ends.

Few tour operators embody the spirit of their business quite like Landon. His tours aren’t just about showcasing landmarks; they’re about weaving personal narratives into the fabric of history, making the past come alive through emotional connections and relatable stories.

“This is a passion for me,” Landon explains. “I’ve always had an interest in history. Learning about my own family background, we have a very unique history.”

A Journey Driven by Passion

Landon’s path to becoming a tour operator wasn’t straightforward. With over 25 years in the tourism industry, he previously worked in operations management for other companies while maintaining a career in education and youth development.

It was during the pandemic that he made the pivotal decision to leave his former career and fully invest in the tourism industry. His passion for history was ignited during his high school years when he faced discouragement from learning about Black history.

Rather than being deterred, Landon took it as a challenge. He embarked on a self-directed journey, learning about the history of New York City and African American history, which led to personal discoveries.

“Learning about my grandfather who played in the Negro League, learning about one of my cousins who was a very famous tennis player, these are stories you grow up hearing but not necessarily connecting the dots,” Landon shares. “Now that I’m able to connect the dots, it brings an entirely new meaning and passion to what I do.”

The Art of Personal Connection

What distinguishes Jojo’s Ventures in a competitive tourism landscape is Landon’s commitment to creating experiences that resonate on a personal level, an approach he cultivated during his years in youth development.

“One of the things about my tour is I leave a personal connection. I try to make it relatable, and I get that from my skills when I was in youth development education,” he shares.

This philosophy extends beyond mere customer satisfaction. It’s about creating moments of genuine discovery and emotional connection. The most rewarding part of his work is seeing guests’ eyes light up when they discover something new or make an unexpected connection to history.

When he gets excited about finding something new, he wants his guests to have that same feeling of discovery and wonder.

A Visionary Approach to Tourism

Landon stands out as an innovator through his methodology of personalization and emotional connection. While many tour operators focus on scaling their businesses to reach larger audiences, he deliberately maintains a more intimate approach, understanding that mass tourism often dilutes the emotional impact and authenticity that make experiences meaningful.

“I am on a smaller scale knowing that I’m not one of those who want to get to the big leagues or get to the big time because it kind of takes away from what I’m doing,” he explains.

His innovation lies in the transfer of educational techniques to tourism. By applying the personalization strategies he developed while working with youth, Landon creates tours that resonate on a deeper level with guests.

He meticulously researches every historical detail and then finds ways to make these stories relatable to diverse audiences, transforming what could be dry historical facts into compelling narratives that connect with each individual’s own experiences and interests.

Creative Evolution Through Perspective

Landon’s approach to developing new tour concepts is as innovative as it is practical. Rather than constantly searching for new subject matter, he looks at existing information through different lenses to create fresh connections and perspectives.

When developing new tour ideas, he focuses on making existing topics relatable to different audiences, finding alternative perspectives that can transform familiar stories into entirely new experiences. It’s about using what you already have and finding ways to spread it out, divide it, or add new dimensions to it.

Impact Beyond Tourism

For Landon, success is measured not just in business growth but in the impact he makes on people’s lives. His pride comes from getting more people interested in history and culture, and leaving a lasting impact on their understanding of themselves and their past.

This sense of purpose extends beyond tourism to education and cultural awareness. His motivation comes from knowing there’s an audience eager to learn, people who share his passion for history and storytelling. When people express gratitude for making complex history accessible or helping them discover something new about themselves, he knows he’s fulfilling his purpose.

Nurturing the Next Generation

As Landon looks to the future, his vision centers on nurturing the next generation of tour guides and historians, ensuring that the passion for authentic historical storytelling continues.

“The goal is to find the young people coming in and keep them interested in it enough so that you can pass the torch to them. That’s an authentic way to pass the torch,” he reflects.

Recognizing the tech-savvy nature of younger generations, Landon sees potential for collaboration across generational lines. The youth of today bring technological expertise, while he offers experience and historical knowledge, a partnership that could secure the future of authentic historical tourism.

Wisdom for the Journey

For those just starting in the industry, Landon emphasizes the importance of persistence and patience in an age of instant gratification. Drawing from his own experience, he encourages new tour operators not to get discouraged by slow growth or initial setbacks.

“Patience is a virtue. Patience is very important,” he advises. “Don’t just give up at the first sign of a defeat or failure. Live through those failures. Live through those defeats and grow.”

Five years into his journey with Jojo’s Ventures, Joseph Landon stands as testament to what can be achieved when passion meets perseverance. Through his innovative approach to tourism, one that prioritizes personal connection and emotional resonance. He’s not just showcasing New York City’s history; he’s creating a new way to experience it, one meaningful connection at a time.
