Otehlia Cassidy, of Madison Eats Food Tours · Madison, WI

Few entrepreneurs so fully embody their brand as Otehlia Cassidy, the force behind Madison Eats Food Tours. A storyteller, connector, and tireless advocate for local businesses, Cassidy has built more than just a tour company. She’s cultivated a thriving community that celebrates Madison’s food scene in an unforgettable way.

Madison Eats Food Tours isn’t just about guiding visitors to great restaurants. It’s about relationships, deep, lasting connections with chefs, artisans, and business owners. It’s about sustainability, diversity, and supporting locally owned businesses.

Otehlia sits at the center of it, and her vision and persistence have made her a leader in food tourism.

A Recognized Leader in Food Tourism

Cassidy’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. She has been featured in Forbes, Taste & Travel, USA Today, and Lonely Planet, and her company is consistently rated as one of the top attractions on TripAdvisor.

As a woman-owned business, Madison Eats Food Tours is committed to supporting locally owned businesses, farmers, chefs, immigrants, and the local economy. Her tours highlight the best of Madison’s food scene, from breweries and distilleries to historic sites and beloved local eateries.

Her innovative approach and commitment to authenticity have positioned her as a leader in the industry. She has built a brand that not only delivers incredible food experiences but also fosters a sense of community and sustainability.

A Business Built on Relationships

For Cassidy, success isn’t just measured in revenue or TripAdvisor reviews (though she has plenty of those). It’s measured in the relationships she’s built over the years.

“When I step back, I see that I have people in this community who rely on me, and I rely on them,” she says. “If they need something, I’m there for them. If I need something, they’re there for me. Those relationships, some of which have lasted over 12 to 14 years, are almost more important than the actual product we sell.”

That foundation of trust and collaboration has enabled Madison Eats Food Tours to grow into one of the most highly regarded food tour companies in the country. But Cassidy doesn’t take it for granted. She knows the challenges of running a business all too well.

The Hidden Struggles of Success

From the outside, Madison Eats Food Tours looks like a thriving success story. But like all small business owners, Cassidy experiences the ups and downs that the public rarely sees.

“One of the most challenging things is that when you combine social media with business, it feels like there always needs to be this sense that you’re succeeding,” she admits. “Sometimes it just feels like crap. Some months are tough, and you don’t really want to broadcast that, but at the same time, you kind of do.”

Through the challenges, she remains grounded in the work she loves. “I’m so creatively driven and feel connected to my product, so I don’t mind answering calls on the weekend, checking emails late at night, or taking a guest call last minute. I’m excited that people want to be part of this.”

The Art of Innovation and Leadership

Being an innovator means more than just coming up with new ideas. It’s about executing them in ways that make an impact.

For Cassidy, inspiration comes from the people and businesses she collaborates with.

“I have a network of friends and business owners in the food and drink community. We talk, we exchange ideas, and we inspire each other,” she says. “That’s where my best ideas come from, our relationships feed each other.”

Bringing fresh ideas to life is no easy task, though. “People don’t realize how hard it is to implement a new tour,” she explains. “It’s not just about dreaming up a cool concept. It’s about finding the right partners, creating a sustainable model, and making it work year after year.”

One of the biggest shifts in her business has been learning how to delegate and trust her team. “Hiring is a skill, and it’s taken a long time to find the right people,” she says. “But now, I have a team that really embodies what Madison Eats stands for. They love this business, and they want to grow their own side of it.”

Looking to the Future

Cassidy’s vision for the future of Madison Eats Food Tours extends beyond Wisconsin. As an avid traveler, she has already started expanding her work abroad through Otehlia Travels, blending her passion for food, culture, and exploration.

But to do that, she needs a strong foundation at home.

“To grow, I need people here who can keep the energy of the business going, even when I’m not in Madison,” she says. “Letting go is hard, but I’m seeing how much my team loves this business and wants to take ownership of it. That’s what will allow it to thrive in the future.”

A True Tourism Innovator

What sets Otehlia Cassidy apart is not just her ability to craft incredible food experiences, but her ability to inspire connection, between people, between businesses, and between cultures.

Madison Eats Food Tours isn’t just a company; it’s a community-driven movement that reflects the values of sustainability, inclusivity, and local pride.

In an industry where authenticity is everything, Cassidy has mastered the art of blending personal passion with professional leadership. She doesn’t just run tours. She tells the stories of the people behind them, making sure their voices are heard and their work is valued.

And that’s what makes her a true innovator in the world of food tourism.
